Overview & Purpose

The Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards are a one-time initiative designed to recruit international or returning Canadian students and postdoctoral researchers to Canada. These awards support the recruitment of doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers in priority areas, helping build capacity, strengthen the research ecosystem and enhance Canada’s global competitiveness. The Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards recognize and support international researchers at the doctoral and postdoctoral levels. By providing high‑quality training opportunities in priority fields, the program strives to attract global talent and strengthen Canada's research ecosystem.

Eligibility

This award is open to international and returning Canadian doctoral students. 

Doctoral Student Nominee: 

  • Is not affiliated with a university in Canada at the time of nomination (includes international candidates and Canadian citizens living abroad) 
  • Has applied for admission to a funded doctoral program within the School of Graduate Studies (PhD or SJD) to start in September 2026 or January 2027 
  • Proposed research is in one of the eight priority research areas 

Principal Investigator (Nominator):

  • Holds Graduate Faculty Membership allowing doctoral supervision (for doctoral student) 
  • Is conducting research within one of the eight priority research areas 
  • Holds an eligible Tri-agency grant (see list of eligible grants
  • Commits to supervising the nominee to completion and fulfilling the normal funding commitment for students in their program (including beyond Year 3) 
  • Has received endorsement from the Graduate Chair of the Graduate Unit where the doctoral student nominee will be registered (for doctoral nominees

Value

The award value is $40,000 per year for 3 years. Please note, for doctoral students, supervisors and graduate units are responsible for providing the standard funding package (including any top-ups normally applied) beyond the award period. 

Award Commence: September 2026 or January 2027

Application Requirements

  • The application will be provided by the RHSE Office after your department has submitted a nomination.
    • Please note: We are currently awaiting additional details on the application form from the School of Graduate Studies and the Tri-Agency office. Updated information will be shared as soon as it becomes available.

*All documents must be prepared in PDF, single spaced Times New Roman 12-point font, including citations if applicable with 2.5cm margins.
