Maïka Harvey

My name is Maïka Harvey and I am a second-year biomedical science student at the University of Ottawa. I have a strong interest in molecular biology, genetics and translational research, particularly in applying gene regulation and disease mechanisms to advance precision medicine.

My pursuit of research began early, as I was awarded the Undergraduate Research Scholarship (URS) upon entering university, allowing me to engage in research within an academic laboratory immediately after high school. Building on this foundation, I was later awarded an Undergraduate Science Research Opportunity (USRO). In the Ekker Lab at the University of Ottawa, my work has focused on gene expression in zebrafish models, with an emphasis on developmental pathways and their relevance to neurodevelopmental diseases, further strengthening my interest in linking molecular mechanisms to human health.

Beyond academics, I am the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of EnQuête, the first French-language academic research journal for high school students in Canada, supported by the Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Marc Carney. I am also the Co-Founder of the Ottawa Clinical Simulation Association (OCSA), which provides high school students with hands-on clinical simulation experiences to explore careers in healthcare. Additionally, I serve as a Reserve Combat Medic in the Canadian Armed Forces, where I perform patient assessment and deliver emergency care in dynamic, high-pressure environments.

In my free time, I enjoy playing the piano, challenging myself with new baking recipes and staying active through sports. This summer, I am excited to work with Dr. Joanne Kotsopoulos, whose research focuses on breast cancer risk and genetic susceptibility, and to contribute to advancing our understanding of cancer prevention and risk stratification.
