Hello! My name is Maria Acosta. I am a third-year student at U of T pursuing a double major in biochemistry and biomedical toxicology, with a minor in immunology. Outside of research, I enjoy walks outside, spending time with friends, and reading.
I am interested in learning about diseases which can affect older populations, such as sepsis. With a global aging population, it is crucial to understand how to decrease the disease burden in this population and maintain quality of life. This summer I am very excited to work with Dr. Moraes and his lab to investigate bacterial proteins, leading to potential treatment or prevention development.
Previously, I was part of the Mekhail lab with the department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology. There, I studied a newly characterized DNA repair mechanism in premature aging cell models.
