Michael Zarychta

Hello! My name is Michael Zarychta, and I am a third-year student at the University of Manitoba pursuing a BSc with a major in Biochemistry. My research interests include investigating cell survival mechanisms and antimicrobial resistance. My research journey began with Dr. Sabine Kuss in the Laboratory for Bioanalytics and Electrochemical Sensing, where I investigated antibiotic resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a potentially deadly pathogen that targets the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients, and how electrochemistry can be used as a method to detect this resistance rapidly and precisely.

Through the Amgen Scholars Program, I will have the opportunity to join Dr. Amy Wong's team in the Program of Developmental & Stem Cell Biology at the Hospital for Sick Children, where I will be using stem cell models to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating human lung development. This project will be a huge step forward in achieving my dream of making advancements in the field of biomedical research!

Some of my hobbies include playing tennis and soccer, coaching youth sports, and learning new languages. I am currently learning Italian, and one day I hope to travel through Italy to try some authentic pizza and espresso!
