Peter Gill

Gill is a national and emerging international leading researcher in paediatric hospital medicine, and the co-founder and chair of the Canadian Paediatric Inpatient Research Network (PIRN)[FH1] . PIRN is focused on generating research evidence to improve the outcomes of hospitalized children in general paediatric settings and includes hospital sites affiliated with all 17 academic children’s hospitals across Canada and 9 large community hospitals. Gill’s patient-oriented research focuses on generating evidence to improve the care and outcomes of children hospitalized in general paediatric settings. His research has advanced the care and management of common and serious childhood infections, such as bronchiolitis, orbital cellulitis, urinary tract infections, and SARS-CoV-2. These research findings have informed clinical practice guidelines and Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) pandemic preparedness.

Gill’s research also aims to partner with patients to improve care and outcomes, including co-leading studies with parent and youth partners, and supporting patient-led research. Lastly, he has led important population-based studies that examine health systems performance for hospitalized children using data from Canada, the US and the UK. Gill Co-Leads GEMINI-Paediatrics, which will become Canada’s largest paediatric hospital data analytics network to improve child hospital outcomes through research. Gill has published over 145 peer-reviewed research articles, including in the Lancet, JAMA, BMJ, and CMAJ. He is a member of the BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine and Hospital Pediatrics Editorial Board. In 2023, he received the Canadian Paediatric Society Young Investigator Award and the Paediatric Chairs of Canada Emerging Academic Leader Award.
