When my son Max was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy I was shocked and devastated, but after these initial feelings subsided I decided I needed to do something with my family to fight against this terrible disease. After much deliberation, my something became Max’s Big Ride; a father and son bicycle ride to help raise awareness and money for research into better outcomes for those living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Over the years we’ve tried to expand our reach and have now grown into a not-for-profit with links to brilliant researchers and labs at the University of Toronto. My hope in starting Max’s Big Ride was that others would hear our story, see us working hard towards a solution and support us – and so far leading by example is working as we’ve been blessed with assistance from so many wonderful people since we began.
When we first started Max’s Big Ride, I remember feeling embarrassed and somewhat ridiculous. Who was I to think that I could have an impact on Duchenne when there were surely already so many brilliant minds working on a cure? What could I possibly add? The past seven years have shown me that one regular person can most definitely make a difference simply by putting themselves out there, asking questions and taking action. The first step in launching Max’s Big Ride was definitely the hardest for me but each step after gets progressively easier as my confidence and contacts build. I no longer feel silly saying I can make a difference in the fight against Duchenne and hope Max’s Big Ride can be an example for others similar situations.
