Purpose
Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)
In 1973, the University of Toronto established the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) to foster advanced research experiences for undergraduate students. Within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, the Research and Health Science Education (RHSE) office oversees the UROP award allocations to departments. These awards are made possible by generous donations in support of medical and health science research.
There are designated subtypes of UROP awards based on the area of research the specific donors wish to support.
UROP Award Subtype | Area of Research |
---|---|
AI | HIV and AIDS |
AR | Arthritis |
CA | Cancer and Cancer-Related Diseases |
CA - JPM | Dr. John P. Mitchell Cancer Research Fund |
CH | Cardiovascular/Heart |
EM | Epilepsy and Multiple Sclerosis |
GM | General Medical (health research in any area) |
KD | Kidney and Kidney-Related Diseases |
PC | Polio, Common Cold, Arthritis or Cancer |
RC | Respiratory, Circulatory and Heart Diseases |
RE | Respiratory Disease |
RHSE Undergraduate Summer Research Studentships (USRS)
RHSE annually awards Undergraduate Summer Research Studentships (USRS) to support the participation of life science undergraduate students in summer research programs.
Each of the eight Temerty Medicine units (unit herein refers to a department, centre, institute or program within Temerty Medicine) that engage in undergraduate life science teaching in the Faculty of Arts and Science, is allocated one studentship to be awarded by the unit on a competitive basis, considering students’ academic excellence and interest in future graduate training.
USRS awards may be used to support any area of health science research.
Additional Details
Award Value & Duration
Each UROP and USRS award is valued at $2,500, plus additional compensation from other sources managed by the sponsoring unit to meet Temerty Medicine's stipend requirement, as indicated in the table below. Typically, this match is provided by the faculty supervisor (principal investigator, PI).
Each UROP/USRS student awardee is expected to engage in full-time research for 12 weeks during the summer. Should a supervisor wish the student to continue research beyond 12 weeks, it is expected that the student be compensated by the supervisor accordingly (as indicated in the table).
