Dr. Christopher Perumalla obtained his Bachelor and Master’s Degrees from Osmania University in India, and a second Master’s and his Doctoral Degree from the University of Waterloo. He moved to the University of Toronto for postdoctoral training in 1986, and it was during this period that he discovered his passion for teaching. He joined the Department of Physiology in 1993, where he holds the appointment of Associate Professor, Teaching Stream. Chris is a passionate educator who has shown sustained visionary and innovative educational leadership and an exemplary mentor for thousands of students. While serving as the Director of the Division of Teaching Labs, Chris introduced cutting edge technology in undergraduate laboratory teaching to enhance their education. His innovation led him to design, develop and deliver the Faculty of Medicine’s online course in physiology, which has become the basis for the development of several other courses. He has been instrumental in creating the Faculty of Medicine’s Youth Summer Program (MED YSP), which provides high school students with an exclusive glimpse into the world of medicine, medical research and other health science professional programs.
Dr. Perumalla has been recognized for his educational leadership with several awards including, the University of Toronto’s President’s Teaching Award, twice with the W.T. Aikins Award (large classroom teaching category and innovative course development), the Undergraduate Teaching in the Life Sciences Award, the Joan E. Foley Quality of Student Experience Award, the Northrop Frye Award (Departmental), and the CIHR Mentorship Award. Chris is taking early retirement to transition as the Senior Pastor of Rexdale Alliance Church and will continue to be involved as an educator in his capacity as a Professor Emeritus.
Reflection
I am incredibly grateful to have dedicated and outstanding teachers and mentors in my life whom I try to emulate. As an educator, I believe in “lighting the fire” and not merely “filling the pail”. When I run into my students or receive emails from them shining in their chosen career, it gives me great satisfaction and deep joy. I am truly humbled by this award and dedicate it to my students and colleagues who have enriched my life.
