In recognition of their outstanding initiatives, three life sciences students were honoured with Undergraduate Student Leadership Awards from the Office of the Vice Dean, Research and Health Science Education (RHSE) at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.
This year’s recipients include Riley Alvarez, of Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology, Raj Parekh of Biochemistry and Emily Yuan of Pharmacology & Toxicology. This award recognizes undergraduate students who embody the values of Temerty Medicine, serve as role models for their peers and demonstrate exemplary leadership skills.
Alvarez, who is completing a pathobiology specialist program, has been an active leader with the Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology Student Union. Among her accomplishments, she worked to organize an annual undergraduate conference and served as an editor with the Journal of Life Sciences.
A specialist in biochemistry, Parekh is an active member of several climate change advocacy groups both within and outside of the university. He has initiated several community-building events for students and has taken on multiple mentorship roles within the university.
Yuan, a pharmacology major, embraces authenticity and vulnerability in her approach to leadership. She has served as a peer mentor to her fellow undergraduate colleagues, and she has been actively involved in various student clubs throughout her degree.
Awarded annually, recipients must be in their final year of a basic medical sciences program, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.7 and be nominated by their department.
"These outstanding life science students show exceptional commitment to their peers, their communities and the university through a wide range of leadership roles," said Ahlia Khan-Trottier, associate dean, undergraduate education.
"The impact of their work speaks to the values of Temerty Medicine and reminds us of the power of inspired action."
