Temerty Medicine Research Excellence Awards
Overview
The Temerty Medicine Research Excellence Award recognizes the innovative research and accomplishments of our faculty. Four awards will be presented each year to early- and mid-career faculty: one early-career and one mid-career researcher in the Clinical Sciences, and one early-career and one mid-career researcher in the Basic Sciences. Details and eligibility windows are outlined below. A secondary goal of this award is to encourage faculty members to strengthen their awards dossier, supporting future nominations for other awards and honours.
The Award
Each successful applicant will receive a $5,000 award (paid directly to the recipient). In addition, successful applicants will have their submission materials reviewed and refined by grant writing experts in RHSE and submitted to an external award competition within 12 months of receiving the award. The external award will be selected in consultation with the applicant and the award review committees.
Deadlines and Application Process
The application process consists of two stages:
- Stage 1: Applicants fill out an Expression of Interest (EOI), which includes submitting a CV (any format, maximum 30 pages). DEADLINE: Friday, Oct 17th, 2025, 11:59pm.
- Stage 2: A subset of competitive, eligible applicants who submit an EOI will be invited to submit a full application dossier. Applicants invited to this next stage will be notified within two weeks of EOI submission. DEADLINE for full application: Monday, December 1st, 2025, 11:59pm.
Anticipated award announcement: April 2025.
Eligibility
Applicants must be faculty (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) whose primary academic appointment is at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.
Early career faculty will be within 6 years of their first academic appointment (i.e., when they were first able to hold independent research funding). Mid-career faculty will be within years 7-12 of their first academic appointment. Formal leaves will be considered. For example, a faculty member that began their first independent research appointment in 2017 but took two one-year leaves would be considered early career.
Award winners will be expected to serve as a panel member on the Temerty Research Excellence Awards Committee in the following year’s competition.
Assessment Criteria
Applicants proceeding past the EOI stage must submit a complete Temerty Medicine Research Awards Dossier. Applicants will be assessed for their research excellence and innovation by a panel of expert researchers at the University of Toronto. Only applicants that submit an EOI, CV, and the completed awards dossier by the deadlines above will be considered for the award.
This is a competitive, research-focused award.
- Early-career applicants are expected to demonstrate emerging research leadership, including securing independent research funding, producing publications stemming from their own research group, and showing competitiveness for other early career awards such as the CAHS Emerging Leaders in Health Sciences Award and the Royal Society College.
- Mid-career applicants should have a strong track record of independent, senior author research publications, sustained research funding, and competitiveness for prominent mid-career awards such as the Peter Gilgan Gairdner Momentum Award.
