Reflections on Temerty Medicine’s Graduating Class of 2024

Convocation marks an extraordinary milestone in the lives of graduate students. Navigating the intricacies of completing a graduate degree is no small feat.

Our students artfully blend vibrant hues of passion with broad strokes of inquisitiveness as they spend countless hours working at the lab bench, in clinical settings and in industry placements, to solve the most pressing health science challenges.

Today, against a warm backdrop of supportive faculty members, staff, friends, peers, and family, we gather in Convocation Hall to celebrate their accomplishments and reflect on what is yet to come for this newest cohort of alumni.

Donned in caps and gowns, our Temerty Medicine graduates begin their procession into Convocation Hall. Amidst the sea of onlookers, the proud faces of family members shine brightly.

The air is filled with a mix of nervous excitement, nostalgia, and pride as students, on the verge of becoming alumni, smile across the crowds, exchanging animated glances with friends. Friends with whom they have shared moments of frustration, triumph, vulnerability, and success throughout their studies, forming lasting memories and deep connections.

Vice-Dean, Research and Health Science Education (RHSE), Dr. Justin Nodwell, who is also a Professor of Biochemistry, reflects on the accomplishments of the graduating class of 2024, expressing pride and admiration for their resilience and determination. “I am immensely proud of each and every one of our graduates,” he praises.

“Their intellectual curiosity, passion for learning and ability to overcome challenges, while embracing their accomplishments with humility, is truly inspiring. Through their pursuit of academic excellence, they have become leaders in their fields and I have every confidence that they will continue to thrive as they step forward into their next journey.”

The future is bright for our Temerty Medicine graduates. For some, they prepare to join the workforce where they will become tomorrow’s leaders in health science research, innovation and communication, tackling real-world challenges.

For others, they will embark on more advanced degrees or postdoctoral fellowships, to further hone their skills and expertise, pushing the boundaries of knowledge and discovery. Regardless of their next adventure, our graduates are primed to make a difference, through their professional endeavours and community engagement.

The overwhelming potential in the room is palpable. As the graduates climb the stage and receive their diplomas, they emerge as alumni, equipped with the tools and confidence to navigate the complexities of the world with courage and conviction.
