Summer Research Awards and Applications for Undergraduate Students can be found on the Research and Health Science Education (RHSE) website

Please ensure you have the following information prepared:

  • Research project title that is agreed upon with your supervisor.
  • Previous research experience and/or relevant experience including lab courses.
  • A statement of research interest/academic goals.
  • Any special considerations or circumstances you would like the awards adjudication committee to consider.

Undergraduate Research Opportunity Award (UROP)

Awards will be provided in the following research areas:

  • CA Cancer and Cancer Related Diseases (awards: TBA)

  • CA-JPM Dr. John P Mitchell Cancer Research Fund (award: TBA)

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology 

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology is pleased to offer TWO awards, on a competitive basis, to provide UofT and non-UofT undergraduate students who self-identify as a Black and/or Indigenous person and/or economically disempowered person with an opportunity to gain valuable research experience during the summer session.

  • Susan R. George Summer Research Student Award (awards: TBA)

University of Toronto Excellence Awards (UTEA)

  • UTEA Health and Life Sciences (awards: TBA)
  • UTEA Natural Sciences and Engineering (award: TBA)

Supervisors must be campus-based, i.e., have their primary budgetary appointment in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine (status-only faculty are no longer eligible) 

A supervisor must be a principal investigator (PI) who holds an active tri-agency grant or has a pending application with one of those agencies at the start date of the UTEA (May 1st) (co-investigators are no longer eligible)

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) (award: TBA)

  • Eligible faculty must hold a tenured, tenure-track or professor emeritus position or a contract position of no less than three continuous years.

  • Eligible faculty must be eligible to hold an NSERC (but do not currently have to have one) and must also have primary appointment and/or funds administered by the Department

NSERC USRA Black Student Award

There will be a total of 24 NSERC USRA Black Student Awards for the university. These awards are competitive and will be adjudicated by the University of Toronto Research Services Office (RSO).

Donnelly Centre for Cellular + Biomolecular Research Summer Undergraduate Research Program

Hospital and/or Research Institutes

Our summer program is a unique opportunity for undergraduates to try their hand at cutting-edge biomedical science and gain research experience for graduate school or employment.

Program Features

  • Conduct research in the laboratory of a top-tier scientist for at least 12 weeks of full-time research, beginning in May.
  • Orientation in May to learn about program expectations and meet other summer undergraduate students.
  • Research seminars from leading faculty in the fields of systems biology, computer science and bioengineering.
  • Q and A sessions with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and research associates.

EPIC Inspire Summer Studentships

Other Research Opportunities

The Emerging and Pandemic Infections Consortium (EPIC) is strongly committed to building a diverse and inclusive infectious disease research community. We recognize that diversity strengthens the quality and impact of research by bringing multiple ideas and perspectives. 

The EPIC Inspire Summer Studentships will foster inclusive excellence by providing third-year Black and Indigenous undergraduate students with opportunities to engage in infectious disease research with and receive mentorship from EPIC’s faculty members. These awards aim to support Black and Indigenous students who are interested in infectious diseases and to create a more diverse talent pool for the next generation of infectious disease research leaders. Applicants will have an opportunity to continue their studentship research as a fourth-year thesis project if both the student and supervisor are in agreement.

We welcome applications from eligible students who are interested in infectious disease research. Applicants will be asked to select their top four research projects from the projects listed below. EPIC will help match interested students with an EPIC faculty member for the summer studentship. The Research Excursions Program (REP 398H/Y Courses) provides faculty members with funding to involve third-year undergraduate students in a faculty-led research project that takes place off-campus during the summer term. Research projects can take place in domestic or international locations. REPs are supervised on-site by an Arts & Science faculty member and participating students receive academic credit. Faculty

The Research Opportunities Program (ROP) is a second- or third-year course in which you can join an instructor’s research project and earn 0.5 or 1.0 course credit. ROPs take place throughout the academic year. 

In an ROP course, you will: 

  • Learn research methods and further develop your research skills
  • Strengthen your graduate school applications by developing a close working relationship with a faculty member
  • Build peer connections with fellow ROP students as you acquire new knowledge together
  • Have an opportunity to share your work at the bi-annual Research Fair — an exciting highlight of the program

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Summer Student Research Program

Hospital and/or Research Institutes

The Ward Family Summer Student Research Program is a highly prestigious student experience offered by the Bloorview Research Institute (BRI) giving undergraduate students an opportunity to experience a unique interdisciplinary mentorship within the field of childhood disability and developmental differences research. Successful incumbents will work with a BRI scientist and their team on a research project, participate in lunch and learns and other activities to enhance both their training and research experience. The SickKids Summer Research (SSuRe) Program provides professional and career development opportunities for undergraduate students who are working on a research project with a Research Institute (RI) scientist for the summer.

Program highlights

  • All undergraduate and medical students doing research with a RI scientist over the summer months are invited to participate in program activities  
  • 15-weeks from May to mid-August 
  • Weekly seminars presented by Hospital and RI scientists 
  • Career Night where students have a chance to meet research staff from across the RI 
  • Opportunity to present research projects at annual Summer Student Symposium 
  • Awards presented to select students for exceptional research projects

Hurvitz Brain Sciences Summer Student Research Program

Hospital and/or Research Institutes

The Hurvitz Brain Sciences Summer Student Research Program offers undergraduate students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a hospital-based research program. Summer studentships typically run from May to September of each year, culminating in an end of summer studentship Presentation Day.
