Banting and Best Diabetes Centre Charles Hollenberg Summer Studentship Program

Hospital and/or Research Institutes

The goal of the program is to introduce undergraduate and medical students to the field of diabetes research and to encourage research in diabetes and its complications as a future career.

Fourteen summer studentships are available for undergraduate and medical students to carry out summer research in diabetes under the supervision of a member of the Banting & Best Diabetes Centre (BBDC). Research projects may be carried out in-lab, remotely, or a combination of both.

Students will be required to work full-time (35 hours per week) for a minimum of 12 weeks commencing in the first or second week of May.  Specific start and end dates are to be arranged directly with the hiring supervisor. However, students should commence work no later than May 15 as they will be asked to present their research findings or progress at a Poster Day in the first week of August.

Students and their supervisors are required to participate in the Summer Studentship Program which consists of attending a Weekly Seminar Series held on Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m. throughout June and early July, and a half-day Poster Day in the first week of August. Both the weekly seminars and Poster Day will be held in person. The seminars and Poster Day expose students to diabetes research across disciplines and provide an excellent opportunity to enhance their research and professional development skills. The supervisor is responsible for guiding and assisting the student with preparation of a brief presentation for the Weekly Seminar Series and a poster for the Poster Day. For complete details, please visit the webpage.

Baycrest Centre Rotman Research Institute Summer Student Program

Hospital and/or Research Institutes

The Rotman Research Institute (RRI) Summer Student Program online application portal will be opening for applications mid-December for summer 2025.

International students will be eligible to apply for the program this year. However, offers to international students will be conditional, contingent on government directives (e.g., travel and work visas) and may result in the withdrawal of the offer. Similarly, the Summer Student Program may be restricted to remote, work-from-home activity for all students, depending on any emergent restrictions at program start. A modified version of our annual summer student curriculum may also be delivered as an online series.

As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, please note that further changes to offers and programming may be forthcoming.

In line with RRI equity, diversity, and inclusivity principles, this year's applications will undergo a partial blinding process, whereby the name and e-mail fields in the application form will be hidden from the hiring Scientists. However, if identifying information is included in your cover letter or other documents, this may not undergo blinding.

This program provides opportunities for university students to conduct research in a laboratory/clinical setting at The Rotman Research Institute, Baycrest under the supervision of a practicing Scientist from the Research Division. The program is 12 weeks in length, with specific starting and ending dates arranged directly with each hiring Scientist in accordance with their research schedule. For complete details, please visit the webpage.

Department of Medical Biophysics Summer Student Program

Departments

From as early as the 1960s, the Department of Medical Biophysics has run a Summer Student program for undergraduate students interested in interdisciplinary biological, medical and cancer research. This program provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to gain experience in biomedical research and to learn about the graduate program offered by the department. Students who are chosen to participate in the program are highly motivated to return to Medical Biophysics for graduate studies and serve as ambassadors, promoting the Medical Biophysics graduate program to their peers.

The program runs from the second week of May to the end of August. An orientation meeting for all Medical Biophysics Summer Students is held at the beginning of the program to introduce students to each other and to provide an in-depth overview of the program.

Throughout the summer, selected students are involved in a research project and are expected to attend weekly lunchtime seminars. At the end of the summer, students are required to present their work in the form of a poster at the Summer Student Poster Day. All staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and summer students are invited to participate in these presentations. This public forum has traditionally been well attended, and has allowed the students to gain valuable experience in presenting their work to others, and in developing their skills in engaging in vibrant scientific interchange.

Awards are available in specific areas of research and students can work with their future supervisor to apply for CIHR and NSERC awards. For complete details, please visit the webpage.
