Lab Instructor for the Temerty Faculty of Medicine's Youth Summer Program (Med YSP)

Faculty

Do you love to teach science and medical concepts? Are you the next Bill Gal/Guy? Join us this summer to teach youth from across Canada and the World.

The MED YSP program delivers university-level science classes in an accessible and engaging manner. In order to ensure the quality of delivery, the process of selecting instructors is rigorous to ensure that only those individuals with the necessary skill, experience and passion, for sharing their knowledge and inspiring a younger generation of Canadian students, are hired.

Instructors come from diverse academic backgrounds that span the fields of human biology, microbiology, biochemistry, physiology to toxicology and allow instructors to work collaboratively during the program to deliver the four one-week long modules. Lectures, labs, demonstrations, discussion panels and informal conversations are employed to educate the students in the knowledge and mechanics of science. The YSP philosophy is to have inquisitive young minds from across Canada come together at a world-class institution where they can work with and teach students the beauty of science. Visit the MED YSP webpage to learn more and apply.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Undergraduate Student Research Awards

Other Research Opportunities

The Natural Sciences and Engineering and Research Council (NSERC) of Canada’s Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) provides financial support so you can engage in research work experience that aligns with your academic interests. This experience will help to position you for future graduate studies in natural sciences and engineering.

The institution allocates a limited number of awards to departments and you apply directly to the departments for these awards. We will post information for the current cycle in January or February of each year. For your reference, you can review information about last year's program.

Other Research Opportunities

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada offers awards for Black and/or Indigenous students to pursue research work experiences within the respective fields. Institutions may recommend applications from self-identified Black and Indigenous student researchers for USRAs beyond the institution's allocation of awards. When applying for these NSERC USRAs, students must identify as Black or Indigenous within the application. For additional information, please review the NSERC USRA webpage and the University of Toronto Funding Opportunities Database.

Research Shadowing Program

Departments

The Research Shadowing Program aims to give students a glimpse into the research environment and the opportunity to ask questions they may have about the graduate student experience.  Students will be paired with graduate student or post-doc mentors.  Program mentors will give an overview of the nature of their research and how it may tie with concepts undergraduate students have learned in their courses.  Additionally, students will have an opportunity to shadow their mentor as they perform their experiments and daily tasks.

The program will take place between February 5 – 23, 2024. The length of the shadowing experience can range from 1 to 3 days and must be mutually agreed upon by the undergraduate student and their mentor.  The specific schedule and shadowing activities (which may take place in-person and/or online via Zoom, MS Teams, Facetime, etc.) will be at the discretion of the mentor.

All U of T Life Science undergraduate students are welcome to apply, regardless of year or program of study.

Note: Students will be paired with available mentors on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to those students who have no prior research experience.

What Participants are Saying:

"The Temerty Faculty of Medicine RHSE Research Shadowing Program is an invaluable opportunity to expose undergraduate life science students to research. As a program participant, this experience fuelled a passion for medical research that I plan to embark on as I pursue my career in healthcare. Guided by my mentor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, my exposure to the wet laboratory setting at the Krembil Research Institute was enlightening. Through our group shadowing experience, I gained insight from her day-to-day tasks as a postdoctoral fellow and navigated various laboratory techniques, including protein fluorescence, cell culturing, and microscopy in relation to her project—investigating the impacts of positive alpha-synuclein on neurodegenerative diseases. Not only did the experience provide a glimpse of the research environment, but offered valuable mentorship for my professional development and an opportunity to network with other life science undergraduate students. As I pursue future endeavours in research, I am sincerely grateful for the exposure to scientific inquiry that the the RHSE program provided me with at the University of Toronto."
